A Greek city on Lonely Planets list of the worlds best destinations to travel to this May.
The renowned travel guide Lonely Planet, in a recent publication, showcases 12 places around the world for spring holidays and, more specifically, for the month of May. According to the guide, this month is ideal for trips for lovers of surfing, nature, history, as well as food based on fresh local produce. Among the suggestions of Lonely Planet is also a Greek city.
Thessaloniki: The ideal city for spring getaways
According to Lonely Planet, Thessaloniki is an ideal destination for a city break this spring. As the article aptly says, although Thessaloniki was founded in 315 BC, it is a city "young at heart". Locals and students fill the squares sipping coffee and tsipouro, sit in groups at Navarinou, and as the weather warms they prefer rooftops and bars. The average temperature of 24°C is ideal even for... the beach. Epanomi is just 25 kilometers away, while the famed turquoise waters of the Halkidiki peninsula lie 2–3 hours away by bus.
Beyond the beach, it is worth a "dive" into the neighborhoods of Thessaloniki. Around Egnatia, the main avenue, there are Roman monuments (including the ruined palace and the Arch of Galerius), intriguing churches and stalls selling koulouri. A wonderful place for walking and cycling is the seafront with the iconic White Tower. Visit the port, home to the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art, and Ladadika, a neighborhood brimming with restaurants and nightlife. Ano Poli with the Castles is impressive with its old Ottoman alleys.
