The beautiful Greek lakes are ideal destinations for the first spring getaways.
As temperatures rise, we dream of escapes to enchanting blossoming landscapes, and spring is the ideal season to discover the natural beauties of Greece. The lakes of our country are outstanding destinations for nature lovers and outdoor activities and more. We selected four lakes, from Macedonia to the Peloponnese, for activities and relaxation against their impressive scenery.
Lake Trichonida, Aetolia-Acarnania
The countrys largest lake, spanning over 90 square kilometers, is among the most important wetlands in Greece. Trichonida, named after the ancient Aetolian city of Trichonion (todays Gavalou), is one of the countrys least touristy lakes. In about 3 hours from Athens you will reach this hidden gem near Agrinio and gaze at its crystal-clear waters, renewed by underground springs, making it ideal for swimming as well.
Activities
Many fish species inhabit the lakes waters, so you can fish in a serene setting. A popular pastime is birdwatching, as about 140 bird species are found along its shores, an ecosystem that makes it a Natura protected area. If its warm, the lakes beaches invite dips and swimming in fresh, cool waters.
What to do nearby
Around Lake Trichonida youll find lovely villages like Myrtia. There you can see the church of Saint John and the chapel of Panagia Eleousa perched on the edge of the rock with wonderful views of the lake. Dont miss a stroll in Thermo, the areas small town with stone-built houses. About 1.5 kilometers away lies Ancient Thermo, the Acropolis of Aetolia with the archaeological museum. If you want a taste of the city, in Agrinio youll find many tavernas, restaurants, and cafés.
Lake Tsivlou, Achaea
One of Greeces most impressive small lakes lies just 2.5 hours from Athens. Enchanting Lake Tsivlou in mountainous Achaea is an ideal spring getaway and beyond. At an elevation of 700 meters, its dreamlike scenery will captivate you. It was formed by a major landslide in 1913 that sank half of the village of Tsivlos. The other half of the village still stands beside the lake to this day.
Activities
You can enjoy moments of relaxation and stroll beside its tranquil waters. It is considered an important wetland for flora and fauna and is suitable for swimming, as well as activities like canoe-kayak and mountain bike. If youre a fan of hiking, try circling it or follow one of the trails in the surrounding forests.
What to do nearby
About 14 kilometers away youll come to Zarouchla, a picturesque mountain village amid firs, with traditional tavernas and guesthouses. In mountainous Akrata you can go hiking, while in Akrata you can enjoy seaside strolls. If you make it to Diakopto or Kalavryta, you can ride the Rack Railway through the Vouraikos Gorge.
Lake Plastira, Karditsa
One of Greeces most famous lakes lies 25 kilometers from the city of Karditsa. The artificial lake named after General Nikolaos Plastiras will offer everything you need, from relaxation to outdoor sports activities. As nature blooms, the scenery becomes ever more impressive.
Activities
Lake Plastira covers an area of about 25,000 stremmas, and driving around it is time-consuming, but its worth trying. Youll come across villages and restaurants at every point to take a break. One of the most striking stops is the lakes dam, which holds back the waters of the Tavropos, where youll also find stalls with local products to pack in your luggage. At the same time, there are several spots with organized activities such as cycling on the lake, Canoe- Kayak, horseback riding and mountain biking. There are many hiking routes, and the trails will lead you either to different points of the lake or to the villages.

The villages around Lake Plastira are countless, and each has its own charm. In Kalyvia Pezoulas and Kalyvia Fylaktis youll find traditional tavernas and cafés. Mesenikolas is renowned for its wine. In Neraida and Neochori youll relish the views, and in Fylakti youll walk among the fir forest. At the Pezoula and Lambero beaches make a stop for a picnic or coffee by the lake.
Dont miss visiting the Monastery of Panagia Pelekitis, clinging to the rock since the 15th century. The view from its courtyard will take your breath away. Another monastery overlooking the Thessalian plain is the Holy Monastery of Koroni, located near the traditional village of Moschato. Before you leave, make a stop in Karditsa for coffee and tsipouro in its squares.
Lake Kerkini, Serres
One of the most striking landscapes in Macedonia is Lake Kerkini, just 40 kilometers from the city of Serres and 100 kilometers from Thessaloniki. It is a protected wetland set against Mount Beles and the Serres valley. According to the international Ramsar Convention, it is one of the 10 wetlands of International Importance of Greece.
Activities
Driving around the lake will offer you special moments, with the dramatic scenery unfolding before your eyes. If you wish you can walk the trails or go horseback riding along its banks. Many choose to fish in its waters, but one of the most popular activities is a boat ride on the traditional «plaves». Over 300 bird species are found in the wetland, and you will be lucky enough to see quite a few -among them the Dalmatian pelicans- if you devote a few hours to birdwatching around the lake. It is an experience not easy to enjoy in many places in Greece.
What to do nearby
Within a short distance Ano Poroia awaits you, one the most vibrant villages in the area, with unique views of Lake Kerkini, lovely guesthouses and good food. Make a stop in Kato Poroia for a meal and in Lithotopos, which sits on its shores to the north of the plain. In Serres you can see the Byzantine Acropolis of Serres and enjoy your coffee and drink.
