The heart of Albania
To get acquainted with the country
Route: Tirana – Saranda (350 km)
If you have at least a week, start in Albania’s capital, Tirana. You can fly in and set off on your journey from there. Don’t skip spending a few days to explore the city first without a car. Visit the historic bunker-museums Bunk’Art, the House of Leaves museum, as well as mosques and churches.
A stop just outside the city at Fustanella Farm to taste the local cuisine is a must. Head to Berat, the "City of a Thousand Windows", and wander its Ottoman alleys and impressive castle. Sample wines at the Çobo winery and, if you want a little adventure, experience hiking and rafting in the Osum canyon.
Continue to picturesque, historic Gjirokastër. Its historic center is a Unesco World Heritage site. Follow the coastal road to make stops at the Apollonia Archaeological Park. Cross the mountains to the natural spring The Blue Eye with its enchanting scenery and continue to Saranda, the heart of the Albanian Riviera. Tip: Avoid the route from Berat to Gjirokastër that passes through the Osum canyon, as the dirt roads can damage the car.
The Albanian Riviera
For beach lovers
Route: Saranda – Vlorë (170 km)
The Albanian Riviera has built its reputation on its spellbinding beaches. Start your journey in Saranda and visit Ksamil, famous for its crystal-clear waters and little islets. Very close by, you’ll also find the archaeological site of Butrint, an ancient Greek city.
Continue north to explore more beaches such as Borsh, famed Himara, Dhërmi and Jale. Hike to the stunning Gjipe Beach or opt to discover the area and its hidden shores by boat. Cross the Llogara Pass in the Ceraunian Mountains and drive to your final stop, Vlorë.
Mountainous Albania
For those who love breathtaking scenery
Route: Tirana – Shkodër (135 km)
For a first taste of the Accursed Albanian Alps, head north toward Krujë, where you will visit the bazaar and the city museum.
Continue to Shkodër, a historic, lively city with bike lanes, castles and its namesake lake, ideal for relaxation. Just outside the city you’ll also find the impressive Mesi bridge. If you want to do something different, leave the car and set out on a multi-day hike in the Valbona river valley and the village of Theth.
Southeastern Albania
For those seeking tranquility
Route: Tirana – Gjirokastër (350 km)
Discover the lesser-known side of Albania, passing through Elbasan en route to Pogradec and Korçë, near Lake Ohrid. The dramatic scenery will thrill you. In Përmet you will visit the thermal baths and unwind. In an hour you’ll reach historic Gjirokastër, with its stone houses and cobbled streets.
Escape to the coast
For a quick getaway
Route: Tirana – Durrës (80 km)
If you only have one or two days, choose the shortest road trip. Start from Tirana and end in Durrës, where you will explore the Roman amphitheater and the Byzantine market. This route takes less than an hour and is enough to get to know two of Albania’s best-known places. If you want another drive, nearby, about 40 kilometers away, lies the tranquil Spille beach.
