Arachova: Everything you need to do in the most famous winter destination

Strolls, sights, activities and the best places to stay and eat. We have put together a mini guide to the best that the «grande dame of Parnassos» has to offer.

Perched on a slope of Parnassos, at 950 meters elevation, a breath from the countrys largest ski center, Arachova knows how to make anyone have a great time: those who seek the cosmopolitan atmosphere of a popular destination, those who want to live intense moments on the ski slopes, and those who wish to enjoy abundant scenes of nature and tradition.

The stately small town of Boeotia, with stone houses and picturesque cobbled streets, has the whole "package" that makes it one of Greeces most beloved mountain destinations: warm guesthouses and excellent hotels that are in themselves a reason for a short getaway, a variety of shops for every taste, vibrant nightlife, fantastic local products and mouthwatering tavernas serving traditional delicacies.

One of the most characteristic sights youll see as you enter Arachova is the imposing Clock Tower. It is the symbol of Arachova and graces many photographs. As for the rock on which it stands, it is called Tyrias and for many years it was used as a natural "refrigerator" for storing cheeses. Next to the rock of the clock tower stands the Church of the Virgin Mary and the old Primary Schoolwhich today operates as a Folklore Museum.

The main road is the heart of Arachova. Everyone and everything converges on this narrow, winding street. Lakka Square is the ultimate meeting point, with shops and all-day hangouts for coffee, sweets and drinks, year-round. The outdoor tables are in high demand, especially on sunny days.

Its worth the effort to climb the 264 stepsto reach the Church of St George,Arachovas patron saint. The uphill stretch is also called "Engarsios" and it was opened in 1927 by the bandit Karathanasis. At the top, an impressive view of the village from above awaits you.

The courtyard of the Church of St George is adornedwith relief slabs featuring designs from Arachova weavings, crafted by Arachova artisans. In this church every year on April 23, locals organize the three-day "Panigyraki" in honor of St George, which evolves into a big festival.

At a distance of 10 km from Arachova lies Livadi. The Parnassos plateau, which was once pastureland with huts and pens, has been transformed into a small, almost town-like settlement with beautiful chalets, traditional stone-built villas, tavernas and cafes. When it snows, the landscape turns magical.

If youre in the mood for hiking or have a 4x4 vehicle, its worth including theCorycian Cave, an impressive caveabove Livadi at an altitude of 1.360 m., in your explorations, to admire the natural sculptures of stalactites and stalagmites.
