Arachova, nestled on the slopes of Mount Parnassos, is one of Greeces most popular winter destinations. In summer, however, without the crowds and traffic, it reveals a quieter, more authentic side. Temperatures drop noticeably in the afternoons, the atmosphere is relaxed and prices are lower than in the winter season. It makes an ideal base for excursions to the mountains and the sea, and it lies very close to important sights. Exploring Arachova
Arachovas streets are quieter than in the winter months, letting you wander more comfortably. Climb the steps up to its summit, to the chapel of St George, where youll enjoy panoramic views. Stroll towards the popular clock tower and explore the shops selling local products. Among them youll find formaela cheese, traditional pasta, trahana and Parnassos honey. Settle in for coffee and food with the tiled rooftops as your backdrop, or in Lakka Square, the locals central meeting point.
The areas story unfolds at the Arachova Folklore Museum, set in a central location. The exhibits come from residents everyday life, with collections ranging from traditional costumes to tools and textiles, books and documents preserved to this day. Special emphasis is placed on the art of weaving, which flourished in the area.
Nearby excursions
Arachova sits at a crossroads for short road trips. In just half an hours drive through the fir trees, youll reach Eptalofos, widely known as Agoriani. This picturesque village stands out for its waterfall, with running waters reaching the square. In the shade of plane trees, enjoy your meal at the tavernas dotted around.
Another option is Livadeia, where in the cooler late afternoon you can walk by the Krya Springs and try its famed meats and souvlaki. In the town of Delphi youll admire the enchanting landscape. The Delphic landscape stretches from the archaeological site of Delphi to Itea and Amfissa and is truly impressive as seen from the cafes and restaurants. A crowd-free excursion is the town of Amfissa, with its traditional houses and its vast olive grove.
Outdoor activities
Its location at the foot of Mount Parnassos makes Arachova ideal for outdoor activities. The crisp mountain air at the Parnassos Ski Center and the surrounding area will refresh you. On Parnassos you can simply go for a walk, or seek out hiking trails, with many different routes to follow. In summer, mountaineering on Parnassos appeals to adventure lovers, as do activities like rock climbing and 4x4 routes.
A little further away -around 40 km or so- lies Mount Helicons hidden gem, Arvanitsa. Amid greenery and fir trees youll see young and old playing, strolling and picnicking. Within the fir forest there are hiking trails, and youll also find a little taverna for food and coffee in the heart of nature.
Iconic sights
Next to Arachova lies one of Greeces most important archaeological sites, the Delphi. At the archaeological site of Delphi you will see, among other things, the Sanctuary of Apollo with the famed Oracle of Delphi, where the Pythia conveyed Apollos prophecies to pilgrims. Dont miss a visit to the modern Delphi Archaeological Museum located next to the archaeological site and featuring a large collection of major works of ancient Greek art. To avoid the heat, its best to go early in the morning to escape the intense sunshine.
About half an hour from Arachova, in a captivating landscape on Mount Steiri, stands the Monastery of Hosios Loukas. It is included on the UNESCO World Heritage list, as it is one of the most important monuments of Byzantine art and architecture in Greece. The monastery is renowned for its architecture, and for its rich decoration with mosaics, frescoes and sculptures dating from the 11th century.
Nearby beaches
If you visit Arachova in summer, you dont have to forgo the sea. About 30 km away lies Itea, a seaside town with a beach in the mountains shadow. In Antikyra Bay, you can swim at the beaches of Agios Isidoros, in Antikyra and at the beach of Distomo, which is known as «Aspra Spitia».
