This is the most enchanting train journey in Europe

An unforgettable journey that connects Chur and St.Moritz in Switzerland with Tirano in Italy, crossing the Swiss Alps.

A plane may be the fastest way to reach your destination, but traveling by train has its own allure. Those who choose it are more captivated by the journey than by the arrival. Take for example the Bernina Express, which runs along the highest railway lines in Europe, passing through 55 tunnels and over 196 bridges.

You relax behind the large windows and soak up the dramatic Alpine landscapes gliding past: snow-capped mountains, glaciers, deep gorges, and sparkling blue lakes. On this journey you won't stop taking photos.

The Bernina Express runs along two railway lines that have been inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage list, Albula and Bernina, while offering views from Switzerland's glaciers to Italy's sun-drenched landscapes. The 4-hour journey connects Chur and St.Moritz in Switzerland with Tirano in Italy, crossing the Swiss Alps.

As Travel & Leisure reports, the online gambling website Rant Casino published a study on the most... Instagrammable train routes around the world and named the Bernina Express the winner with more than 96,000 tags.

The famous Landwasser bridge, Lago Bianco at 2,253 m, Alp Grüm with its unique view of the Palü glacier, and the circular Brusio bridge are just some of the route's highlights.

There are two trains that run on this line: the Bernina Red Train and the Bernina Express. The first offers intermediate stops along the route and has regular windows that can be opened from the inside. The second has larger, panoramic windows that extend almost across the entire wall of the train, which, however, don't open. Seat reservations are required on the Express.

Although the line operates year-round, it's become better known for its magical winter routes, with the train «plowing» through deep snow, offering passengers spectacular views at every turn.
