Easter with colorful hot-air balloons
What makes Easter in Leonidio special is a unique Easter custom that began in the late 19th century. On the night of the Resurrection, as soon as «Christ is Risen» is heard, dozens of homemade, multicolored «hot-air balloons» are released and light up the sky, creating a spectacular sight. Residents have followed the same construction ritual for years, and the custom dictates that each household make its own balloon. The key ingredient to success is the «kollimara», a cloth soaked in oil and kerosene that they set alight to start the «flight».
