Lagkadia is one of the most beautiful villages ofArcadia - but also of all mountainous Greece- and it is worth getting to know it better. Built on a steep slope of Mainalo, amid lush vegetation, it is known as the «hanging village of the Peloponnese» as it seems to hang above the wild gorge.
Lagkadia of Arcadia: A village – a gem
Homeland of two Greek prime ministers (Theodoros Deligiannis and Nikolaos Deligiannis), and of the region’s most renowned stone masons, Lagkadia spreads amphitheatrically across the mountainside, creating a striking scene. The village, 65 km from Tripoliand at an elevation of about 900 meters, has been designated a listed traditional settlement. The winding road follows the contours of the landscape and leads to the heart of the village, embellished by the works of the famous Lagkadian builders.
Lagkadia is a handcrafted village. The houses, churches, the historic school, fountains, the square and the uphill cobbled lanes are true masterpieces of stone architecture. The village is divided into the Upper and Lower Quarters. The Lower Quarter lies in a lush ravine through which the Lagkadia river flows, while the Upper Quarter stands out for its picturesque character and the unique panoramic view it offers the visitor. In the upper quarter you will see the Deligiannis mansion, with heirlooms and rare objects from one of the area’s most historic families.
The village’s central square, with its centuries-old plane trees, is lined by guesthouses, cafés, tavernas and shops with folk art and local products. Jewels of the village include the Church of the Taxiarches with its impressive clock and the Church of Saint John the Forerunner - it is said that both were built within 40 days due to a time restriction set by the Turks.
If you enjoy outdoor activities you can follow a section of the Mainalon Trail towards the village of Valtessiniko and discover springs, watermills and the great meadow of Grilas. Nature lovers can also visit the artificial Lake Ladonas, between the Lagkadian mountains and Mount Aphrodisio.
