Lake Trichonida, the largest natural lake in Greece, is a true paradise for lovers of nature and tranquility. Known also as Apokouro or Vrachori, it is located in the Prefecture of Aetolia-Acarnania, a few kilometers southeast of Agrinio, between Mount Panaitoliko and Arakynthos. Its crystal-clear waters are constantly renewed by underground springs, keeping the lake clean and vibrant.

The lakes natural environment
With an area of about 96 square kilometers, Trichonida is surrounded by lush green slopes and trees. Along its shores you will see over 200 plant species, from plane trees, cypresses and olive trees to water lilies. It is also an important habitat for the areas fauna, with bird and mammal species, while rare fish swim in its waters, such as the tiny dwarf goby. Its importance has been recognized internationally and it is included in many protection programs, such as Natura 2000, while it also participates in international projects for monitoring and conserving its habitats.
The beaches of Trichonida
The view of Lake Trichonida is impressive from every point around it. With its calm waters and size, from afar it looks like a serene sea. After all, along its shores you will find beaches for swimming. Some of them are Sitaralona Beach, Pamphio, Ammos, Myrtia Beach and Mourtos Kapsorachis. Do not miss the lakes dam, an ideal spot for photos.
Picturesque villages worth a visit
Around it stretch picturesque villages and settlements with stone-built houses, welcoming locals and traditional cuisine. To the north, the villages of Panaitolio, Kainourgio and Paravola are popular destinations for walking routes and nature strolls. On the southern side, the area of Makryneia with the villages of Gavalou, further on Papadates, Grammatikou, Kato Kerasovo, Trichonio, Agios Andreas (Bourlesia), Dafnias, Kato Makrinou and Kapsorachi, exudes tranquility.
Historic Thermo
Thermo is perhaps the lakes most popular destination, a small town with a rich history at an elevation of about 360 meters. In the central square you will find the Springs of Thermo and the Town Hall, while all around there are tavernas and cafes beneath cool plane trees. The ancient city of Thermo, located outside the new one, was the administrative and religious center of the Aetolian League. There stood the Temple of Apollo Thermios, whose ruins you will encounter at the archaeological site, and it is also worth visiting the Archaeological Museum of Thermo.
About three kilometers away lie the Springs of Agia Sofia, in the village of the same name. The landscape with centuries-old plane trees, rocks and springs will impress you. At a similar distance you will find the settlement of Mega Dendro, the birthplace of Cosmas of Aetolia. In the village are the foundations of his family home, and very close by are the Monastery of Cosmas of Aetolia and the Monument to the Fallen Airmen. Near the village of Myrtia is also the historic Holy Monastery of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary of Myrtia, where Cosmas of Aetolia was hosted.
On the route leading to the lake, you will encounter the picturesque Petrochori, with an impressive view of Trichonida. It is worth being there at sunset to enjoy the panoramic view of the lake and the plain.
