From Matera's cobbled lanes and Switzerland's Alpine lakes to Colmar's fairytale canals, we traversed 2.500 kilometers through the heart of Europe with the new Citroën C5 Aircross, proving that the most beautiful travel stories are ultimately written on the road.
There are trips you take simply to get somewhere. And there are those that, in the end, are etched in your memory for the miles you clocked, the landscapes that changed outside the window, and the moments you lived along the way. Our European road trip, a 2,500-kilometer route from Athens to Paris, clearly belongs in the second category.
This time, the destination wasn't just another pin on the map, but the backdrop for a life event: my own wedding. And just like that, the new Citroën C5 Aircross wasn't just our vehicle, but our welcoming «home» for six days, a haven of comfort that let us savor every stop to the fullest.
The beginning and the familiar feeling of escape
We set off on a Friday afternoon from the heart of Athens. In the air was that familiar blend of excitement, sweet anxiety, and the sense that for the next few days the road would become our daily routine.
First stop Igoumenitsa. About 450 kilometers on the road, with night falling as we approached the port to catch the ferry to Brindisi. The real European adventure was just beginning.
La Dolce Vita: Stone, history and Italian flair
The moment the tires touched Italian soil had something purely cinematic about it. Everything ahead of us felt new.
First major stop, Matera. A city almost otherworldly, with stone houses and alleys carved into the rock that seem frozen in time. Walking among the ancient Sassi, where legendary films have been shot, we immediately got into the trip's mood: we left haste behind and surrendered to the joy of discovery.
The drive north gave us an overnight in Pescara and a short detour to San Marino, a necessary stop to add one more country to our travel résumé, before we ended up in Bologna. Despite 500+ kilometers of driving each day, the stately comfort of the C5 Aircross made the hours on the Autostrada pass painlessly, leaving us with energy to explore each city upon arrival.
Around then we began to realize that the essence of a road trip lies in the little moments in between:
In the first, authentic Italian espresso at an unknown Autogrill.
In the music that accompanied the sunset as we drove along the Autostrada.
In the refreshing aperitivo by the calm waters of Lake Maggiore, with the southern Alps as a backdrop and the air of Italian-Swiss finesse.
Switzerland: Driving through a postcard
The fifth day of the trip was perhaps the most visually impressive. Switzerland welcomed us with scenes that looked painted: snow-capped peaks, lush green valleys, hidden lakes and mountain roads that tempt you to stop every few kilometers for photos.
A standout moment was crossing the famed Gotthard Tunnel, a multi-kilometer journey beneath the heart of the Alps. We stopped for food and a short breather in picturesque Lucerne, with its lake and wooden bridges offering the ultimate Alpine setting.
Despite the huge distances, the elevation changes, and our full load, the drive flowed effortlessly and comfortably, allowing us to focus exclusively on the beauty of the landscape.
A French fairytale and the arrival in the City of Light
Crossing the French border brought with it the sweet anticipation of the home stretch. Before reaching our final destination, though, we made one last stop in magical Colmar.
A city that seems taken from a Brothers Grimm fairytale, with colorful half-timbered houses, small canals brimming with flowers, and quiet lanes that make you forget the notion of time.
And then, the last day. The road to Paris.
The final kilometers had a distinct, emotionally charged atmosphere. Not from physical fatigue, since the C5 Aircross proved the ideal traveler, keeping us rested and with impressively low consumption throughout the route, but from the realization that we had made it. Six days, more than 2,500 kilometers, five different countries and countless images.
When we finally saw Paris, ready at last for our wedding, we realized something simple: That sometimes the most beautiful stories are written on the asphalt. And ours had just begun.
