AEK is preparing to travel to Italy to face Fiorentina for Matchday 4 of the League Phase of the Conference League on Thursday 27 November. Discover how much it costs to travel to Florence during that period.

Florence, the capital of Tuscany, is one of the most enchanting cities in Italy and in Europe. The entire city is a sight in itself, with lively piazzas and masterpieces of Renaissance art and architecture. From the Duomo Cathedral and the Ponte Vecchio bridge to the works of Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, in Florence you have plenty to see even if you stay only a few days.

Florence is drawing interest for Greek fans, as on 27 November AEK will travel there to face Fiorentina for the 4th matchday of the League Phase of the Conference League at the «Artemio Franchi» stadium. Florence is a city with tourism in every season, so when there are events and matches that draw even more people, airfares are higher. That’s why the sooner you book a ticket, the better. For those days there are no direct flights from Athens to Florence. Round-trip tickets with a connection start from 300-400 euros, depending on the waiting time at the intermediate stop.

However, the ideal option is to fly directly from Athens to Bologna which is nearby and reach Florence by train or bus, as the journey is about 40 minutes to one hour. Prices for flights from Athens to Bologna start from around 310 euros, while train and bus tickets start from 14 euros and 6 euros respectively one-way. Another popular solution is a flight to Rome that starts from 310 euros round-trip and the train ride to Florence takes about 1.5 to 2 hours and the cost starts from 23 euros one-way.

Accommodation

Florence is a city that rewards walking. Whichever area you choose to stay in will be close to the main sights. However, each neighborhood has its own atmosphere and advantages depending on the itinerary you want to follow. The area around the Artemio Franchi Stadium is a little farther from the historic center but has more budget-friendly options for accommodation starting from 60 euros for a double room for one night.

If you want immediate access on foot to the sights, restaurants, and bars, then you can choose to stay in Centro Storico, the historic center of the city. There, accommodation starts from 80 euros for a double room, but an average is around 150 per night. If you want good access to the train station and public transport, you can choose the Santa Maria Novella area. In the lively neighborhood around the central train station you will find a double room from 60 euros, with an average of 120 euros per night.

Getting around and food

In Florence it’s worth walking a lot and getting to know the city at your own pace. However, you will need to travel to the stadium for the match if you are staying in the center or reach some farther sights by public transport. From Florence Airport you can take the tram directly to Santa Maria Novella, in a journey that lasts about 25 minutes, with a ticket that costs 1.70 euros for a 90-minute ride. You can reach the stadium by bus, with a ticket that costs 1.70 euros for 90 minutes.

In Florence there are plenty of options for food to go and in restaurants. Prices are higher than in other less touristy cities, but depending on the neighborhood you move in prices may vary. For a meal in a trattoria you will pay from 10 to 20 euros per person, while with a drink it can reach 30 euros per person. For food to go you will spend about 5- 10 euros per person, while you will pay for a pizza from 8 euros.
