It may not be as popular as Amsterdam, but Rotterdam is a destination with its own unique identity that holds surprises around almost every corner. Fans who will be in the Dutch city for the Feyenoord - Panathinaikos match, taking place on 23/10, will have the chance to discover a «different» destination, a city without overtourism, famed for its multicultural character, rich maritime tradition, and striking contemporary architecture. But what can you see if you have just one or two days in this distinctive city? Keep the list that follows.

A few words about Rotterdam

Rotterdam is the Netherlands second-largest city and the largest port in Europe, from which Dutch families once emigrated to New York. It is not another «picturesque town» of the Netherlands. Here you wont find a fairytale historic center or many old buildings. A large part of the city was leveled during World War II and rebuilt from scratch with its gaze set on the future. Postwar architecture and modern skyscrapers dominate the landscape and make Rotterdam feel entirely different from any other city in the Netherlands. The less touristy atmosphere, compared to Amsterdam, is ideal for those seeking a more authentic travel experience.

Architectural landmarks

The striking Cube Houses (cube-shaped homes created by architect Piet Blom, most notably the Overblaak Development), the Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen museum that resembles a giant mirror-glass bowl, the Nieuwe Luxor Theatre and Rotterdam Centraal station are among the citys architectural landmarks. Rotterdams bridges are equally distinctive, especially the Erasmusbrug (also known as «the swan») which is considered a symbol of Dutch contemporary architecture.

The Markthal (covered market) is another architectural masterpiece worth seeing up close. Its interior ceiling is adorned with a colossal artwork depicting a festive canvas filled with fruit, vegetables, and flowers.

Stroll through the citys streets

Rotterdams old harbor (Oude Haven) is the perfect stroll for snapping photos of the Cube Houses. Once the heart of the citys maritime trade, it now hosts many historic wooden vessels and some smaller modern boats. Around the harbor there are restaurants and bars with terraces where you can enjoy a beer or a glass of wine.

A stroll along Witte de Withstraat, the citys liveliest street, packed with bars, boutiques, galleries, and colorful graffiti, is a must for every visitor. Food lovers will find their paradise in the bustling food markets, such as the Markthal and Fenix Food Factory. The once-notorious district of Katendrecht has been transformed in recent years and is home to some of the citys most interesting restaurants and bars.

If your eyes need a break from the futuristic architecture, visit the historic neighborhood of Delfshaven, one of the few places left standing after the citys bombing during World War II. This picturesque area is known for its charming canals and traditional Dutch houses.
