Lille, the capital of the Hauts-de-France region, lies on the border with Belgium and is considered one of the most vibrant and up-and-coming cities of northern France. It blends Flemish architecture with French finesse, boasts a beautiful historic center, modern neighborhoods and a lively student life. Despite its industrial past, Lille has transformed into an impressive destination with museums, restaurants, shops and cultural events.
The city is ideal for a short trip, especially in autumn, and pairs perfectly with a football experience, such as the Lille- PAOK match at the impressive Stade Pierre-Mauroy on 23 October, for the 3rd matchday of the League Phase of the Europa League.
Flights
To get to Lille from Athens on a direct flight, return tickets are available only for the dates 21-25 and start from 105 euros return. You have more choices of days and times if you book tickets directly from Athens to Paris, with costs starting from 155 euros round-trip. Then you can take the train to the center of Lille, for a journey that lasts 1 hour and with ticket prices starting at about 45 euros.
If your trip starts in Thessaloniki, there are no direct flights to Lille, and direct flights to Paris are also limited on those days. For a Thessaloniki - Paris return flight, prices start from 195 euros. From Charles de Gaulle airport you will take the train and reach Lille in the same way we mentioned above. The sooner you book your ticket the better, as prices will have risen as the date approaches.
Accommodation
The Stade Pierre-Mauroy is located in the suburb of Villeneuve-d’Ascq, known for attractions such as the sculpture park and the Musée du Terroir and Musée des Moulins. Staying near the stadium is more economical, with prices starting from 60-70 euros. Lille has accommodation options for all budgets and tastes. The closer you get to the historic center the pricier it is, but you have access to more shops, sights and restaurants. If you book a hotel in the city center, you can easily reach the stadium by public transport.
If you prefer to stay in the historic center, in the Old Town (Vieux Lille) prices start from 60-70 euros and on average rooms cost 100-120 euros. Very close is the Grand’Place with many options for going out, where prices for a double room start from 100 euros. The neighborhood that is convenient for getting around by train and for your arrival from Paris airport is the area near the Gare Lille Europe station. There the cost of accommodation starts from 70 euros.
Transport and food
Transport prices vary depending on the means you choose. If you land at Lille airport, the bus ride lasts about 25 minutes to the center and the cost is about 7 euros. If you land at Paris airport, the journey time and cost to reach the city by train is about one hour and the ticket starts from 45 euros as we mentioned above.
If you are staying in the center the easiest way to reach the stadium is the metro. The ticket costs about 2 euros. A popular option when the weather is good is renting a bicycle for getting around the city, with the 24-hour V’lille pass costing 1.80 euros.
In the city you will find plenty of options for food in all areas. In the center there is a greater variety of restaurants and the cost starts from 15- 20 euros per person for a meal. You can find street food for 8-12 euros, while at a finer restaurant you will pay from 25-60 euros or more depending on the area in which it is located.
