Lush and picturesque, Poros is for many a favorite destination for a weekend and beyond.
A nostalgic aura, picturesque alleys, lush nature and elegant mansions compose the unique setting of Poros. It is one of the islands of the Argosaronic that essentially consists of two small islands, Sfairia and Kalavria, separated by a very narrow channel just past the Naval Base. It lies very close to the mainland, just ten minutes by boat from Galatas and about an hour from the port of Piraeus.
Poros is ideal for those seeking a tranquil escape by the sea and in nature. The experiences it offers are many, as you will find plenty to do and see. There are many reasons to adore it, even if you decide to stay only for a weekend.
The climb to the Clock Tower - symbol of Poros
Looking at the harbor of Poros it is impossible not to notice the Clock Tower, the islands emblematic landmark. The historic Clock stands on the hilltop above the town and was built in 1927. The walk up is short, through picturesque lanes and traditional houses, and truly worth it as the view over the harbor and the sea is breathtaking. The ideal time to visit is at sunset, when the golden light bathes the tiled rooftops of Poros.
The emblematic Sanctuary of Poseidon
The Sanctuary of Poseidon, in the islands interior, will transport you to antiquity. The Temple of Poseidon is Doric, built in 520 BC, and has wonderful views of the Aegean. It is one of the three major sanctuaries of Poseidon in the Saronic Gulf, forming an isosceles triangle with the temples of Aphaia on Aegina and of Poseidon at Sounio. In the 4th century BC it was one of the most important sanctuaries in the area and it is said that the orator Demosthenes ended his life here. Southwest of the temple lies the Bouleuterion of Kalaureia, where the representatives of the seven cities that participated in the Amphictyony of Kalaureia met.
Swims at the Russian Naval Station
A beach with a long history that is worth a stroll, even if you do not dive into its waters, is the Russian Naval Station. In this cove lie the ruins of the amphitheatrically built 19th century naval station, which create a cinematic image by the waters edge. Since 1989, by decision of the Ministry of Culture, all the buildings of the Russian Naval Station have been designated as historic monuments. Turquoise waters, pines that reach the shoreline and its history compose a unique destination. For more swims, some of the islands most famous beaches are organized Askeli, verdant Love Bay, Megalo Neorio with its tamarisks and tranquil Vagionia.
Strolls with the harbor as a backdrop
The town of Poros looks like a postcard, as it is built amphitheatrically above the harbor. Picturesque alleys with elegant mansions, small balconies and flowers create an ideal backdrop for endless strolls. The harbor buzzes with life from morning to night, with cafes, little tavernas and shops standing in a row. The islands relaxed rhythms invite you to sit for local meze and ouzo, as well as for a drink with views of the fishing boats.
Activities in nature
If you are a lover of natural landscapes, Poros will offer what you seek. The island boasts lush trails for hiking and many routes. Among others, one of the most popular is the Agioi Anargyroi trail, from the Clock Tower toward the old windmill and Agioi Anargyroi or Agios Athanasios. Additionally, you can ride through nature and along the harbor on your bicycle or choose a boat trip around the island, for swims in secluded coves, as well as water sports such as rowing and kayaking.
