The lesser known pink lakes of Greece

And yet, these exotic pink lakes are found on a Cycladic island.

On the world-famous beach of Agios Prokopios in Naxos there is a truly unusual natural phenomenon, close to the azure waters of the shore. Behind the beach are Alykes, the largest and perhaps the most important wetland in the Cyclades from an ecological perspective. It covers an area of about 1.000 stremmas and there, during the migratory periods, hundreds of bird species find refuge.

Alykes forms three small lakes. When the water level rises, they then merge. The pink color of the waters, as seen in the striking photographs, is due to a combination of natural factors, chiefly the presence of microscopic organisms.

Unfortunately, environmental organizations active on the island that lies in the «heart» of the Aegean point out that increased tourist flows threaten the pink lakes of Agios Prokopios during the summer months. In fact, they report that every summer, as the lakes shrink, they are turned into a parking area for the cars of visitors to the island.
