A true wonder of nature, the Polylimnio of Messinia, is located in the heart of the Peloponnese and impresses every visitor with its heavenly beauty.
Hidden within a lush green gorge, between rocks and dense vegetation, Polylimnio offers one of the most impressive landscapes in all of Messinia. Just a few kilometers from Kalamata, this hidden paradise with turquoise waters looks like a scene straight out of a movie.
Messinia is a destination full of surprises for lovers of the sea as well as nature. From the shores of the Messinian Gulf to the mountains, the scenery is enchanting. One of the most striking sights you'll encounter in the area is undoubtedly Polylimnio, near the village of Charavgi, about 34 kilometers from Kalamata.
The «Blue Lake» of Messinia
The name Polylimnio is no coincidence, as the area is a complex of successive lakes and smaller and larger waterfalls. The stream runs between the rocks, forming natural «pools» and small waterfalls, within a landscape covered in lush vegetation. Because of its color it's also known as the «Blue Lake» of Messinia.
Walking along the path that follows the stream's course, you'll see waters in shades of green and blue, rocks, and little wooden bridges. The lakes have their own names, including Mavrolimna, Kadoula, the Lake of the Italian, the Lucky One, Panagos, and Stathoula. Many of the names are connected with local stories and traditions.
The most famous spot in Polylimnio, however, is Lake Kadi. After all, that's where most people gather. It covers about 300 sq. m. and is surrounded by impressive rocks and dense vegetation. On one side, an imposing waterfall plunges into its waters, creating one of the best spots for photos. That's where you'll take your icy dips and cool off.
Kadi's waterfall is one of Polylimnio's signature attractions and is said to reach about 25 meters. Equally impressive is Kadoula, which got its name from its heart-shaped form. There's another impressive waterfall there, about 25 meters high.
The route through Polylimnio
The tour starts in the area of Charavgi. From Kazarma, on the Messini-Pylos road, follow the signs to Charavgi and then to Polylimnio, up to the parking area. Leave your car and start the hiking route, which takes about 15-20 minutes. The total route is about 3 kilometers and will take you around 2 hours. However, you don't have to walk it all, as there are cool spots along the way.
From there a downhill path starts and then the hiking route through the gorge. The first parts are relatively easy, but as you go further some sections require more attention. There are little bridges, steps, and places where metal posts have been installed to make passage easier.
The waters are especially cold, which delights most people in the summer when the area is quite hot. Their green and blue hues, combined with the natural environment, create the feeling that you're somewhere far from Greece. However, dives call for caution, as the rocks can be slippery and not all spots are suitable for swimming or diving.
What to keep in mind
Spring and summer are the most popular seasons to discover Polylimnio, when access is easier and temperatures make hiking ideal. Winter and early spring require greater caution, as rains can significantly increase the water flow and make some sections of the trail more difficult or dangerous. That's why the route isn't recommended for very young children.
Polylimnio is a destination for exploration and not just a short stroll. Comfortable athletic or hiking shoes are essential, as there are slippery spots. Make sure to bring some supplies such as water or a snack, as well as a bag to take your trash with you. In addition, it's a good idea to wear sunscreen and a hat, and a swimsuit if you want to take a dip. Don't forget to bring a towel with you, too.
