Halkidiki is, as is well known, famous for the spectacular beaches with turquoise waters that enchant everyone. However, Halkidiki hides many beauties in its mountains too, something you realize when you take a stroll through the areas that unfold between Holomontas and before the peninsula of Athos.
In a gorgeous landscape in Mountainous Halkidiki, on the route between Olympiada and Varvara, you will encounter two impressive waterfalls, hidden within dense nature and vegetation. These are the Varvara Waterfalls, a wonderful and lesser-known destination for nature lovers, families as well as anyone else who wants to unwind in a unique setting of natural beauty.
Varvara Waterfalls: A hidden paradise in Mountainous Halkidiki
The Varvara Waterfalls are hidden in the heart of the dense forest of Varvara, yet they are closer to Olympiada. The water of the waterfalls flows into the Mavrolakas, the river that is the border of Olympiada and Varvara. Driving one of the most beautiful paved routes in Halkidiki, on the Varvara - Olympiada forest road, after you pass the «5 Springs» (Krasoneri), you will descend until you see the relevant sign on your left. A short stretch on a passable dirt road follows until you reach the point where you will leave your car. After a short (about 10 minutes) well-marked walk through nature, you will feel the magical power of the water.
There are two waterfalls. Following the easily accessible path to the left you will encounter the first waterfall in a magical, cool landscape. For the second waterfall take the path to the right of the kiosk (it is best to wear comfortable clothes and athletic shoes or boots). Following the path you will be able to admire the waterfall from above. The enchanting setting is completed by the forest’s dense vegetation consisting of yews, alders, lindens, beeches, and wild hazels.
