Where to swim in Hydra

Hydra may not be renowned for its beaches, however, it will surprise you with the options it offers for endless swims.

Stately and picturesque, Hydra is one of the most distinctive islands in Greece. The island, where cars and motorbikes are not allowed, is an ideal destination for relaxation and endless strolls on foot.

This Argosaronic Gulf island is one of the favorite destinations for Athenians for short escapes, thanks to its special beauty, with mansions cascading amphitheatrically above the harbor like a postcard. Although it is not among the islands famed for their endless sandy beaches, Hydra offers plenty of spots for swims in crystal-clear waters.

Just a few meters from the harbor you will find Spilia, one of the most famous spots for a dip on the island. Simply walk a few minutes and you will see a rocky setting with space to lay your towel. You can plunge straight into the deep turquoise waters or descend the ladder there. If you simply want to unwind with a wonderful view of the harbor, you can sit at the café tables you will find there.

Right next to Spilia lies Hydronetta, another emblematic spot of Hydra. The natural rocks create a striking setting, while the view toward the open sea is unique. There too you can sit at the café- bar and head down the steps for your swims. At Hydronetta many climb the rocks and leap from high into the sea. It is especially popular at sunset, as it offers one of the most beautiful scenes on the island. Immediately after Hydronetta you will find Avlaki, a very small beach with turquoise waters.

Via a path of almost one kilometer or by water taxi from the harbor you can reach Kaminia (Megalo and Mikro Kamini), a calm and picturesque settlement. There you will see the distinctive red house, the old house of Miaoulis, and the little harbor with fishing boats. Next door there is a beach bar with a small beach, where you can relax on sun loungers and swim at any hour of the day.

About 2 kilometers from Hydra Town lies one of the best-known beaches on the island. This picturesque beach with pristine waters combines sand and pebbles, is organized, and is suitable for families with small children. There you will find seafront tavernas serving fresh fish and traditional dishes. Access is by excursion boats, but also on foot, about 40 minutes from the harbor, following the coastal road.

Bisti

The southernmost cove of the island, Bisti, is an organized beach with blue-green waters beside a lush forest. Bisti stands out for its natural setting, as the trees behind make the beach even more beautiful while offering shade and coolness. Access is by excursion boats from the harbor or by water taxi. Right next to Bisti is the small and quiet beach of Agios Georgios, with the namesake little church towering above the rocks.

Agios Nikolaos

Agios Nikolaos is one of the most beautiful beaches on Hydra. It is located in a sheltered bay on the southwestern side of the island and is accessible mainly by water taxi. The beach combines pebbles, crystal-blue waters, and an impressive natural environment. The secluded position of the beach creates ideal conditions for relaxation and rest, far from the crowds.

Mandraki

Mandraki lies east of the town of Hydra and is one of the most organized beaches on the island. Access is easy either on foot or by water taxi and excursion boat. The waters are crystal clear and it is the only large sandy beach on Hydra. In the section that is not organized it is mainly pebbly. Mandraki has beach bars and restaurants where you can enjoy your meal after your swim.
