Looking across the globe, Intrepid Travel created a list of 10 lesser-known destinations that are ready to welcome - and deserve - more visitors, where tourism can bring meaningful change to local communities. In fifth place on the list is a Greek island celebrated for its beauty and tranquility.
Alonnisos among the top up-and-coming destinations for 2027
According to Intrepid Travel, many islands in Greece face challenges due to overtourism. However, there is an island in the Sporades that offers authentic experiences and holidays away from the tourist crowds - and that's none other than the Alonnisos. According to the «Not Hot List», Alonnisos is a model of how tourism can help conserve nature while creating experiences for travelers and opportunities to support the local economy.
The island is home to the Alonnisos and Northern Sporades National Marine Park, Europe's largest marine protected area, and it is an important refuge for endangered Mediterranean monk seals.
