Christmas is approaching and the mind now wanders to the mountains of Greece, to stone-built villages hidden among fir-clad slopes. A festive escape to a picturesque village in nature is just what you need to relax, have fun, and spend quality time with friends or family. Below you will find some ideas for Christmas getaways to destinations no more than three hours from Athens.
Vytina, Arcadia
Perched at an altitude of 1,033 meters, on Mount Mainalo, in a lush area with pines, firs, and chestnut trees, Vytina is an ideal destination for winter escapes. It is one of the most popular villages in the area, as it was the first settlement to develop tourism thanks to its proximity to the Mainalo Ski Center. Stroll the village lanes, admire the old mansions, and visit the Vytina Folklore Museum where you’ll learn more about the traditions and daily life of the area’s inhabitants. In the square you’ll see the stone-built Church of Agios Tryfonas and sit for coffee or a drink at the places all around. Buy local products from the traditional shops and try local specialties at the little tavernas. One of Vytina’s most popular spots is the «Road of Love», a romantic route among tall trees that change colors with the season.
Zarouchla, Achaia
In about 2.5 hours from Athens, you can find yourself in a picturesque place that marries a natural landscape of unparalleled beauty, tranquility, and outdoor pursuits. Built at an altitude of 1,100 m on the slopes of Helmos, amid firs and chestnut trees, Zarouchla is one of the most beautiful villages of Achaia. A walk through the village to the sounds of running water will be unforgettable, while your eye will be drawn to the imposing tower houses, some of which have been restored. Trails sunk deep in the forest will lead you to enchanting corners with unique views toward the village and the peaks of Helmos. Zarouchla is an ideal base for exploring the area. Halfway along the route from Akrata to Zarouchla you’ll come across the magical Lake Tsivlou, surrounded by dense forests. In winter, its snow-covered, tree-lined slopes give it an Alpine look. Using Zarouchla as your base, you can also visit Kalavryta and the Helmos Ski Center.
Trikala, Corinthia
Trikala, Corinthia, with its three picturesque districts (Lower, Middle, and Upper Trikala) and its enchanting nature, is an ideal destination for those who want a very well-organized mountain getaway, with many accommodation options for every budget and taste. Dense forests of junipers and black pines, serene lakes, stone-paved squares, cozy guesthouses, and little tavernas serving good food offer the perfect festive setting, just two hours from Athens. If you have time, be sure to include short excursions in the surrounding area to see the artificial Lake Doxa, which is beautiful in every season.
Agoriani, Fokida
Built at an altitude of 900 m in the northwestern part of Parnassos, on seven small hills (hence the modern name Eptalofos), Agoriani is nestled in a dense fir forest, among running waters. Although it is just 25 km from Arachova, this picturesque village has its own loyal following. In winter, dressed in white, Agoriani will make you feel as if you are in an Alpine village. The square with its famous fountains and centuries-old plane trees is the village’s busiest spot. Here you will enjoy your coffee or meal with views of Parnassos’s forested slopes and the plain of Lilaia. From the square starts a cobbled path that leads to the beautiful Agoriani waterfall, 20 meters high. Nature lovers can hike on trails (the most famous is the E4, which connects Agoriani with Delphi in 6 hours) and explore the renowned Corycian Cave or Cave of Pan, while winter-sports lovers will find their paradise at the Parnassos Ski Center that is just 20 km from Agoriani.
Pavliani, Fthiotida
Just two and a half hours from Athens, a magical destination amid firs and lush nature, beside the waters of the springs of the Asopos River, awaits you to discover it. Built on the slopes of Mount Oiti, at an altitude of 1,040 meters, Pavliani, one of the most mountainous settlements of the prefecture of Fthiotida, attracts more and more travelers who seek tranquility and relaxation combined with athletic activities within a dense fir forest. It is divided into Ano and Kato Pavliani and is built traditionally with architecture based on stone and wood. The village features a uniquely beautiful recreation park, made by its residents with care and respect for the natural environment, which is an ideal destination for families with children. The entrance to the park is marked by a piano - bridge that plays music as you cross it! Inside the park there are playful signs, hammocks between the trees, distinctive benches, and other imaginative constructions that invite you to live a unique experience and to become children again yourselves, if only for a little while.
