From Rome to Munich: A unique train journey for Christmas

The festive train that whisks passengers from Rome to Munich to experience the ultimate Christmas magic.

How about a Christmas journey by train across Europe, with decorated carriages, views of enchanting Alpine landscapes, and stops in charming cities and traditional local markets? For those who want to experience the magic of Christmas through a leisurely train journey, the Espresso Monaco route, by FS Treni Turistici Italiani, is one of the best travel options for this December.

This is the Christmas edition of the well-known overnight service, a 17-hour journey from Rome to Munich that promises an unforgettable festive experience.

The train departs from Roma Termini station at 7:57 p.m. on two December weekends (the 5th and 12th of the month) and arrives in Munich the next day at noon. The return from Munich takes place on December 7 and 14. As Travel & Leisure reports, passengers can choose between single or double cabins, four- or six-berth couchettes, or simply budget seats. Prices start at 129 euros per person (90 euros for children aged 4-14).

Espresso Monaco will pass through 11 cities with traditional Christmas markets, making stops in Verona, Bolzano and Innsbruck, among others, before reaching Munich. The atmosphere on board will be festive too, with Christmas decorations and music, a special menu in the restaurant, and a small gift for every passenger. In Munich, travelers will have the chance to visit the iconic market in Marienplatz, in front of the neo-Gothic town hall. It is one of Germanys oldest and most famous, filled with handmade gifts and traditional treats.

FS Treni Turistici Italiani also offers shorter themed routes for the holidays, such as the day trip «Espresso Assisi: Christmas Markets Edition», from Rome with final destination Arezzo, which hosts a lesser-known yet equally charming Christmas market.
