National Geographic: This is the most romantic coastal city in Greece

National Geographic traveled to the most romantic seaside city in Greece and recommends everything worth doing there.

National Geographic recently ran a feature on the beauties and attractions of Nafplio, describing the capital of Argolis as the «most romantic seaside town in Greece».

The city of Nafplio, just a few hours from Athens, «is a trove of timeless beauty and relaxing charm», writes National Geographic and adds: «As the first modern capital of Greece, it blends neoclassical architecture, cobbled lanes and a welcoming atmosphere. Here you can explore historic vineyards, wander through picturesque alleys and watch the Aegean shimmer at sunset».

The National Geographic feature pays special tribute to Nafplios Old Town. «Nafplio is full of narrow lanes, colorful historic houses and old Ottoman fountains. At its heart lies Syntagma Square, a lively spot where outdoor cafés invite you to sit and relax. A short distance away, local artisans and silversmiths continue family traditions. As you wander the Old Town, youll discover charming neoclassical buildings and vibrant squares. Visit Nafplios central park, where the statue of Theodoros Kolokotronis dominates, the Greek general who played a decisive role in the countrys struggle for independence» writes Rosa Castillo for National Geographic.

The journalist also suggests a visit to the Archaeological Museum, a climb up to the Palamidi Fortress with panoramic views over the city and the Argolic Gulf, and a stroll to Bourtzi, the small islet-fort at the entrance of the gulf that is Nafplios signature landmark.

Close to Nafplios Old Town, Arvanitia Beach is ideal for refreshing swims, while after your dip its worth a walk along Arvanitias cobbled promenade around Acronafplia. Epidaurus and Mycenae make for a nearby excursion rich in history, while for oenophiles National Geographic recommends a visit to nearby Nemea, a winemaking region with a long history.
