A Greek island makes The Guardians list of the five ideal European destinations for spring.
Spring has arrived and the weather is just right for trips and excursions. The Guardian put together a list of five of the best spring destinations in Europe, from the Baltic to the Bosphorus, including among them one of the most popular Ionian Islands. The British newspapers choice is none other than Lefkada, the «mainland» island blessed with spectacular landscapes and some of Greeces most beautiful beaches.
The Guardian «votes» Lefkada for spring
As the British newspaper notes, Lefkada is a delight for all the senses with its colors and aromas. Especially in spring its colors are rich, the hills lush green and the seas deep blue. Up in the mountains, scarlet poppies cover the plains. Although Lefkada is an island, access is easy and ferry-free, as it is connected to the mainland by a small bridge.
«In spring in Lefkada, the earth really sings», the Guardian report underscores, while giving special mention to the activities one can enjoy on the island. The picturesque village of Englouvi is ideal for hiking, and across the island locals are clearing the trails. The article highlights how spring is the best season for walks along routes with blossoming almond trees, wildflowers and daisies, with stunning views towards the sea. A beautiful moderate-to-difficult route is the Englouvi- Karya trail, which lasts a few hours.
The reference to food is not missing from the article, with the village of Englouvi standing out again: «In Englouvi you will find the Lithanofli taverna beneath the shady plane trees. Here, you are in lentil country. Locals are proud of their distinctive variety, Englouvi lentils, cultivated by residents and harvested by hand. Try them with garlic, oregano and extra virgin olive oil».
It then talks about the rocks and gorges, as well as Lefkadas pine forest and the quarry that resembles a lunar landscape. One of the striking places mentioned is the tiny chapel of Prophet Elias with theamazing 360-degree view. There is also a special mention of the beautiful village of Syvros spreading along the slope, with views towards Vasiliki Bay. «Beyond its rural charm, good tavernas, olive museum and proximity to stunning beaches, it makes an excellent base for walking», the Guardian writes about this village.
