Lonely Planet takes us on a tour of spectacular beaches, in various corners of the world, that are well worth visiting in winter.

Kvalvika, Lofoten Islands, Norway

Arriving at Kvalvika beach in the Lofoten Islands of Norwayyou feel as if you are at the edge of the earth. This remote beach is accessible only via a 4 km hike on Mount Ryten. The route there is adventurous, but the sight of the ocean and the imposing cliffs rewards the bold. Several hiking trails circle the mountain and its summit, and are worth it for the view alone. If youre lucky, you might even see the Northern Lights dancing in the night sky.

Reynisfjara, Vik, Iceland

The most famous black beach in Iceland.Here you can marvel at an impressive, otherworldly scene composed of black sand and stunning rock formations. According to a local legend, on this beach the trolls dragged a ship ashore, but to their misfortune, with the light of day they turned to stone! Reynisfjara beach is accessible on foot from Vik, the southernmost town in Iceland that is a 2.5-hour drive from Reykjavik.

Inchydoney, West Cork, Ireland

Thanks to its striking landscapes, Ireland is a favorite destination for nature lovers and photographers from around the world. Beyond meadows, lakes and rivers, the land of the Celts also boasts enchanting sandy shores, like the one at Inchydoney, a small island off West Cork. Many visit this distinctive beach in winter or autumn, umbrella in hand, to explore the rocky natural pools, while the more daring choose it for surfing. And once theyre thoroughly soaked, they find refuge in the pubs of the picturesque seaside town of Clonakilty.

Charmouth, Dorset, United Kingdom

You may not dive into its waters, but Charmouth beach has its own distinctive beauty and its own «treasures». On the Jurassic Coast of England, this beach is famous for its abundance of fossils. If you want to get in on the action, the west side of the river is the best spot to search for prehistoric remains, combing the stones and rocks along the shore.

This little island off the Atlantic coast of France,with white houses, terracotta roofs and a laid-back atmosphere, is a little paradise of southern France. In July and August, its full of tourists and its hard to find somewhere to stay. Fortunately, beach strolls are just as beautiful in winter and the sunset is impressive all year round.

Hot Water Beach, Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand

Hot Water Beach on the Coromandel Peninsula of New Zealand, is exactly what its name says. It is one of the few beaches in the world where you can «soak» in natural hot pools in the sand, even in the dead of winter. The hot springs bubble up right on the shore. Just dig a little and a natural spa will form, with water that can reach 60 degrees Celsius.

Cannon Beach, Oregon, USA

This striking beach on the West Coast of the United States is famous for Haystack Rock, a huge rock rising on the shore. Cannon Beach is a popular destination in winter too, offering the ideal setting for atmospheric, relaxing walks in the mist on foot or on horseback during the day and at sunset.

Cox Bay Beach, Tofino, Canada

And yet, bad weather brings many visitors to this beach in Tofino, a small area on Vancouver Island. After all, one of the locals favorite pastimes here is storm watching. Cox Bay Beach is considered the ideal «wild» beach for a stroll on a cold, windy day, gazing at the unobstructed panoramic views of the stormy Pacific Ocean. It is also an excellent place for experienced surfers, as the waves are usually impressive.
