On this little-known beach in Argolis, you can dive... into history. A submerged ancient city lies just a short distance from the shore and at a depth of just two meters.
The prefecture ofArgolidain the Peloponnese hides many «treasures» for those in the mood for exploration and new experiences. It is a place rich in history and filled with fascinating sights that remain unknown to many. Few people, for example, know that a stones throw from Ancient Epidaurus, two hours from Athens, there lies a sunken city. It is the ancient sunken city of Epidaurus.
If you love exploration, upon arriving in Ancient Epidaurus ask the locals where the spot with the ancient sunken city is (see the spot on the map). This sunken city is just off the shore and at a depth of only 2 meters, at Kalymnios Beach or Gliati.
Finds there range from building foundations to 12th-century Mycenaean tombs and amphorae.Archaeologists and research reports speak of a possible trading post in the area where the sunken city and Old Epidaurus stand today.
You can see these parts of the ancient city of Epidaurus even while swimming! Just make sureyou have a mask and snorkel with you to see the city even better under the water.
The beach has sand, small pebbles and clear, azure watersthat deepen gently, but watch out for sea urchins (its best to wear water shoes). It is close to Gialasi beach, which is considered the largest beach in the area.
