Time Out: Europe's coolest neighborhood for 2026 is in Athens

An Athens neighborhood was ranked first in Europe and third in Time Out's global ranking of the coolest neighborhoods for 2026.

Every year, Time Out showcases the world's «cool neighborhoods» that every traveler should discover. A global network of contributors and editors selects one standout neighborhood in each city, based on the culinary scene, nightlife, distinctive local businesses, quality of life, and sense of community. This year, the list of the planet's 40 coolest neighborhoods features 13 European cities. In fact, topping the European ranking is a neighborhood in the heart of Athens!

Neos Kosmos: Europe's coolest neighborhood for 2026

Neos Kosmos took first place in Europe and third in Time Out's global ranking of the coolest neighborhoods for 2026. According to Time Out's article, between the Acropolis and the Athenian Riviera, Neos Kosmos has quietly evolved into one of Athens's most interesting neighborhoods, without losing its local character. Long in the shadow of neighboring Koukaki and Pangrati, it now attracts young creatives and independent businesses, while families and students, among others, live there.

As Time Out notes, the energy this neighborhood radiates owes a lot to the Onassis Foundation's Stegi, Athens's famed cultural center that stages exhibitions of contemporary Greek art and hosts one of the city's best-known rooftop restaurants. Along the area's streets, traditional bakeries sit beside Armenian shops and Thai restaurants. For breakfast, Time Out's editors recommend Naif, and for coffee and snacks, Lalos. They also suggest visitors stroll along Baknana Street, passing by the traditional bakeries Vlachos and Moutrichas, have lunch at Lostre Kuzina, at the Armenian grill house Mortis or at Fita, and finish their day with a drink at Epta Martyres, at Bar Amore or at Teras. Autumn and spring are usually the best seasons to visit, as many events take place outdoors. The annual Neos Kosmos Block Party is usually held in early October, bringing the whole neighborhood together.
