Beyond wonderful turquoise beaches and seaside villages brimming with life, the Thasos, the northernmost island of the Aegean, also boasts lovely mountain villages, draped in greenery, that will make you forget you're on an island. Stone mansions in Macedonian-style architecture, cobbled lanes, lush vegetation and flowing waters create a unique setting for lovers of nature and tradition. We've picked out and recommend three villages of Thasos that you shouldn't miss.
Panagia
About 8 km. from Limenas lies one of Thasos's mountain jewels, the village of Panagia, which was once the island's capital. Here you'll encounter a scene with large plane trees, plenty of flowing waters and picturesque houses. Characteristic is the architecture of the houses with slate roofs, small wooden balconies, covered verandas and wooden cladding. Notable is the Church of Panagia, which is closely connected with the village's life. The church celebrates on August 15 and with it the whole village.
Kazaviti
Following the uphill road that starts from Prinos, you'll reach Kazaviti, the island's oldest village. Essentially, it's two villages, Mikro and Megalo Kazaviti, which are 500 m. apart. These villages took their name from the Latin words casa (house) and vitus (wine), while they're also known as Mikros and Megalos Prinos. Stone mansions with wooden balconies, perched in tiers on the hillside, emerge from the lush vegetation. Under the plane trees of the square there are little cafés and tavernas serving local delicacies.
Theologos
At an elevation of 220 m. in the center of the island, 50 km. from Limenas and 10 km. from Potos, lies Theologos, a picturesque mountain village that deserves to be on your list. The village is built amphitheatrically and stands out for its traditional houses. Their hallmark is hewn stone on the roof. Abundant clear waters and dense vegetation complete the settlement's beautiful picture. In Theologos it's worth visiting the folklore museum housed in the Hatzigiorgis mansion, seeing the old churches and trying kid goat in the tavernas. Nature lovers can also enjoy a swim at the Kefalogourna waterfall which is just outside the village.
