Lonely Planet published a list of the best destinations in Europe for holidays in August. See which Greek destination it singled out.
The travel guide Lonely Planet has compiled its own list of places in Europe that are ideal for holidays in August. «Summer in Europe is wonderful – but August is one of the busiest months, which means you'll share the magic with many tourists», writes Lonely Planet and suggests six destinations for holidays away from the crowds in the many magical corners of the continent. Among Lonely Planet's suggestions is a Greek destination: Pelion.
Pelion among Lonely Planet's top summer destinations
A summer destination that rivals the islands, Pelion is a paradise for those seeking quality, tranquil holidays that blend mountain and sea.
«Sure, you can "bake" on crowded beaches on some Greek island. But in scorching August, you can instead opt for cool Pelion», writes Lonely Planet and adds: «There's a string of seaside resorts, mostly more secluded and calm than other areas. Visit Horto or Milina on the west coast or the busier Horefto, Agios Ioannis and the charming Damouchari near the beautiful Fakistra Beach on the east coast».
On the mythical mountain of the Centaurs, ancient cobbled paths link the traditional villages where you can admire church frescoes, sip local tsipouro in the shade of imposing plane trees and savor local specialties such as spetsofai and fasolada. Lonely Planet also suggests a summer ride on «Moutzouris», Pelion's little train that runs the Ano Lechonia-Milies route.
